What is Talk Therapy, Counseling?, by Faith Winters, LPC, ACS

What is talk therapy, counseling? Counseling is a way you can make your life better. Talking through your concerns with a competent therapist can help you find better ways to cope, solve problems and set realistic goals. Counseling, therapy, talk therapy or psychotherapy are general terms to describe ...

a way of treating mental and emotional disorders by talking about your condition and related issues with a highly trained mental health professional. Through these talk sessions, you learn about the causes of your condition so you can better understand it. You also learn how to identify and make changes in

troubling behavior or thoughts, explore relationships and experiences, find better ways to cope and solve problems, and set realistic goals for your life. Counseling can help you regain a sense of happiness and control in your life and help alleviate your symptoms, such as hopelessness.

Talk therapy can be short term, six or eight weekly sessions, or it can take many sessions over many months. It can take place in individual, couples, family or group sessions.

When you make an initial appointment to discuss what counseling can do for you, I will ask about your needs, your situation. I will lay out how I work and what I can do to help you through talk therapy, and go over the costs. When you schedule your intake counseling session we will work together to define your goals and develop a plan to work towards those goals.

In the process of therapy I consider it an honor and a privilege when someone lets me walk along side of them in the struggling and important times of life. I will treat that trust with great care and respect. There is no judgment in me for how the issues started. I simply want to focus on you and how your life can be better through counseling.
